South African cuisine is a vibrant combination of recipes
from the many cultural groups that have co-existed in the country over the last
350 years. The San, the first known inhabitants of the country were mainly hunter-gatherers
and were one of the first to discover and use rooibos.
Other cultures have since embraced it as much for the rich mahogany colour as the
fact that it appears to be a natural meat tenderiser. This may have begun with the
braai or barbecue, as we know it, which is now a favourite pastime in South Africa.
It dated back originally to the trekking days when explorers cooked meat, fish and
vegetables in a pot over coals.
Rooibos can replace the liquid content in any recipe by adding its delicate flavour
and rich colour as well as its health giving properties. In our recipe section we
have several dishes to entice you to bring red bush into your daily diet.
Top TV Chef and author Sophie Grigson is a great fan of our Redbush tea and has
kindly contributed to our recipe pages. Sophie tells us that "The first thing that
attracted me was the fact that it is naturally caffeine free. I also love the taste
and it makes for a more satisfying hot drink than most herbal teas. The other thing
I really like about it is its beautiful clear colour."
